My Philosophy of Art Education
"We must figure out how intelligence and morality can work together to create a world in which a great variety of people will want to live."
-Howard Gardner
Art stresses the importance of developing creative problem solving skills that are critical for success in our rapidly changing economy. Art education allows students to express themselves and think outside the box. It teaches them to work together for a common purpose. Art education benefits motor-skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk talking and inventiveness.
My role as an art teacher is to create a positive learning environment that addresses needs of a diverse population and provide students an atmosphere in which creative thinking is encouraged and developed. My philosophy of art is based on Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. People are different, students learn differently and all have different personal experiences, abilities and perception. My goal is to ensure a classroom that addresses the needs of its learners which is tolerant of their identity as human beings and is best achieved by the individual effort of the teacher as well as the student. Finding and making personal connections with a diverse population of learners is something I develop through collaboration with students, educators, community, as well as my own personal reflection and professional development.
In my art classroom alone, I am not only teaching the fundamentals of art. I do not only teach elements and principles of design. I am not there to just teach the mixing of colors and historic styles of masterpieces. I do not want to just reach every type of intelligence for all of my students. I am in the art room to teach students how to work together. I am there to teach them right from wrong. I am there to show my students that their creativity and minds can help the world be a better place for future generations. My goal is that my students leave the art room being better civilians in the world, acknowledging their power and potential. My job is the most important job on Earth; teaching our youth to share, to work together, to be creative, to imagine, to be beautiful people, no matter how they learn or process information.
The most important questions we should be asking ourselves, according to Gardner are, “What do you want to do with our life? Are you learning the kinds of things that will allow you to be successful, productive and make a contribution to society? There is no IQ test or intelligence test that will answer the questions of becoming and being a good human being.
